In keeping with the UNAI’s mission to “generate a global movement of minds to promote a new culture of intellectual social responsibility,” on 18 June 2012, UNIC Tokyo and members of the media saw three Japanese UNAI participating universities – Meiji University, Rikkyo University and the International University of Japan (IUJ) – pledge to collaborate and develop a world-class education programme that trains global leaders.

After the agreement on “nurturing international cooperation personnel” was signed by President Kenichi Fukumiya from Meiji University, President Tomoya Yoshioka from Rikkyo University and President Masakatsu Mori from IUJ,  Ms. Mari Yamashita, Director of the United Nations Information Centre, offered words of encouragement on behalf of the UNAI network in Japan.  “It is our hope to see more students getting interested in UN issues through this programme,” says Ms. Yamashita and she proposed some ideas in which students could get involved to learn more about the UN.   These ideas include participating in Model UN activities, promoting UN issues on the occasion of UN Day (24 October) and working as interns at UNIC Tokyo.

As part of the agreement, the three universities have jointly developed a nine-day summer intensive English programme for the undergraduate students from Meiji and Rikkyo to learn English at IUJ, a university that accommodates many graduate students from all over the world with courses conducted in English.  The programme will aim to motivate and train students for the global needs of tomorrow. With the universities’ reputation for success, it is expected that this new arrangement will be a positive force for the future.
